OPEN POSITIONS

Mechanical Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Specify, design and optimize key components of the Linear Generator to drive down cost, improve performance and deliver high reliability and longevity.
  • Contribute to a wide array of projects spanning multiple fields: thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, structural mechanics, controls, etc.
  • Use Solidworks and in-house analytical tools to design and analyze components.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering and vendors to optimize cost/performance balance.
  • Work with test engineers to test systems and components and rapidly incorporate results into the next design iteration.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar background.
Lab Technician

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Assemble subcomponents for high efficiency linear generator.
  • Help with installation of new equipment to support testing. This includes large steel structures, tubing, conduit, electrical wiring and boxes, sensors, unistrut and other components.
  • Build supporting fixtures and brackets for mounting gauges and sensors around test area.
  • Wire sensors for test fixtures.
  • Work with engineers to build test fixtures to rapidly iterate on new designs.
  • Keep lab area organized and well stocked to improve overall productivity.

Education and Experience

  • 3+ years experience with mechanical assembly, professional or as amateur hobbyist.
  • Experience with precision measuring, down to .001”, using micrometers, bore gauges, gauge blocks, etc.
  • Attention to detail and documentation.
  • Experience with basic machining (lathe, mill), metal fabrication and welding a plus.
Embedded Systems Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Choose microprocessors and daughter/development boards to meet system specifications for multiple control units.
  • Design and implement fast inter-module communication between motor controllers and other control units.
  • Architect and implement processor operations for multiple system control units.
  • Design software to manage microprocessor hardware and interface with user-space code.
  • Implement user algorithms in software.
  • Create build process and tools for multi-processor environment.
  • Debug basic microcontroller behavior, e.g. PWM outputs, quadrature inputs, A/D performance with oscilloscope and other tools.

Preferable Skills and Qualifications

  • Generalist with solid physics background and track record in making.
  • Mastery of C/C++.
  • Experience with microprocessors/DSPs and RTOS.
  • Experience controlling motors.
  • Experience with complex integrated real-time mechatronic systems (e.g. automotive powertrain controller).

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Electrical or Computer Science Engineering with five or more years experience.
Electrical Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Design and integrate electrical networks.
  • Disconnects/Safety.
  • Transmission line and load balancing.
  • Design and support grid interactive inverter and DC bus architecture.
  • Design circuit boards for instrumentation and system control.
  • Integrating with 3rd party components.
  • Implement design processes and test procedures for new designs.
  • Support debugging and implementation of electrical circuits.

Preferable Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent problem solving skills.
  • Generalist with a solid physics background.
  • Experience with breadboarding and soldering.
  • Familiarity with motor drive architectures (inverters, igbts).
  • Experience with Matlab/Simulink a plus.
  • Experience with board layout softwares (Eagle, OrCad etc.).
  • Experience with microprocessors/DSPs/microcontrollers.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering with over five years experience designing and implementing electrical circuits or systems.
Analytical Modeling –CFD Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Use CFD tool(s) to guide design in creation of optimized, unsteady flow, charge air, cylinder and exhaust flow systems.
  • Correlate CFD results with engine test data for predictive model use.
  • Work with test engineers on DOE for correlating CFD models with engine test data.
  • Integrate CFD analysis with engine systems level model analysis.
  • Work with manufacturing engineers to optimize production cost vs performance.
  • Working with design team, perform thermal FEA for optimizing cooling system performance.
  • Help with new test cell design, specification, and build-out.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical engineering
  • 3 years of experience in unsteady flow analysis using commercial software (Converge, Star-CD, Ansys-CFX)
  • Experience in IC engine aircharge and exhaust flows a plus
Software Platform Architect

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  • Architect, design, and implement internet-networked systems for interacting with an autonomous commercial product.
  • Lead the development of software to receive, store, and retrieve large amounts of system data from a distributed network of nodes on each system as well as collections of systems.
  • Drive the creation of a system to update remote software on a large embedded system, manage microprocessor hardware, and interface with user-space code.
  • Implement engineering interfaces for autonomous subsystems and components.
  • Support real-time software development, modeling and analysis by implementing algorithms and reviewing code for adoption of best practices.

Preferable Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience developing production software in a large code-base where software interacts with remote hardware, (e.g. updating remote software/firmware, retrieving logs, remote control)
  • Driven individual with history of significant contributions
  • Generalist with wide breadth of skills in software system architecture, design, and implementation
  • Strong software management skills:  version control, software processes, test, continuous integration, etc.
  • Strong operational capability with Linux, Python, and Node.js is a plus
  • Experience writing drivers, state-machines, build processes is a plus
  • Experience supporting sub-millisecond (5 – 500 μs) real-time software latency constraints is a plus.

  • Degree in computer science or software or electrical engineering with over five years experience
Controls Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Solve integration issues on new and novel linear-generator platforms.
  • Implement distributed control and diagnostics for sensors and actuators in a power-generation machine.
  • Control various types of dynamic systems (gas-flow, cooling loops, fans, high-speed servos, motor current-loops).
  • Use inter-module communication to send and receive information (e.g. control commands, system status, debugging, logging) between sub-system control computers.
  • Understand real-time hardware as it impacts timing and discretization.
  • Build simple electronic circuits when needed for signal conditioning, amplification, or isolation. Debug sensors for any noise and disturbances and assist calibration.
  • Model dynamic systems for simulating linear generator performance (continuous-time ODE simulations, discretized versions of continuous models, and discrete pmodels based on Poincaré maps).
  • Select, develop and implement control algorithms of varied types (PID with feed-forward, Modern/optimal/MIMO, sliding-mode, model-predictive, adaptive, prepetitive-adaptive, etc.).
  • Design and implement diagnostic algorithms to detect faults or irregular conditions.
  • Design algorithms and software for fail-safe linear generator operation.
  • Specify sensors and actuators needed to meet controller requirements.
  • Use Simulink, C, and C++ to implement models and control algorithms.

Preferable Skills and Qualifications

  • Generalist with wide breadth of skills in analysis, circuit design and construction, modeling, sensors, and making/hacking.
  • Closed-loop control of several systems using one or more of: microcontroller, system-on-chip processor, DSP, real-time operating system.
  • Matlab, Simulink and xPC or a similar rapid-prototyping and analysis real-time system.
  • C/C++ in embedded systems.
  • Sensors such as pressure transducers, RTDs, current transducers, and quadrature encoders.
  • Actuators such as motors, valves and pressure regulators.
  • Exposure to Python (or Ruby or Node.js).

Education and Experience

  • Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering with over five years experience integrating and controlling physical systems.
Test Engineer

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Operate linear generator at a range of operating characteristics. Understanding of thermodynamic fundamentals is helpful.
  • Work with other engineers to set-up, execute tests and incorporate results in next design iteration. The goal is to iterate quickly on new designs.
  • Calibrate, wire, and debug components/sensors for the generator and interface with them using a data acquisition system.
  • Help optimize data post-processing (in Matlab).
  • Help with new test cell design, specification, and build-out.
  • Help with mechanical assembly of generator as well as process development to improve quality and efficiency of hardware builds.

Education and Experience

  • Mechanical skills and hands-on experience working in a hardware-intensive environment.
  • Component and/or systems level testing.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with Matlab a plus.
  • Experience with Python and Raspberry Pi / BeagleBone a plus.
